The first type of rice cooker is a combination bean pot, deep fat fryer, and rice cooker. They have a temperature gauge that you have to adjust manually, but you will get a lot of use out of one of these. They have a glass lid, and most of them don't come with a steaming tray. Instead, they usually have a fry basket.
There are automatic rice cookers, more streamlined, but still not very expensive. They have an automatic temperature control, and they turn themselves down to a lower setting when the rice is done. They also have a tray that sits on top to cook meat and vegetables while the rice cooks. There are many dishes you can fix in the automatic rice cooker. Basically, it boils for a few minutes and then cuts down to warm. You can always push the cook button again if you need to.
You can often find them available in thrift stores or yard sales, priced quite cheaply. People don't understand how versatile and simple they are to use. Once someone actually understands what is possible with a rice cooker, they will use it often. However, most people think it is just for rice. Rice cookers have not become very popular yet in the Northeast Tennessee area.
