As a cooking instructor, I am always on the look-out for fun, easy ideas for my kids' cooking classes. I have just found this excellent little project on the Rice Krispies website and had to share it with you. Now your children can extend the tree trimming, even after your Christmas tree is in place in all its glory!
Trimmed Christmas Tree Treats
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp butter or margarine
- 1 package (about 40) regular marshmallows OR 4 cups mini marshmallows OR 1 jar of Marshmallow Creme
- 6 c Kellogg's Rice Krispies OR Cocoa Krispies
- Canned frosting or decorating gel
- Assorted small candies
Directions
- In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. If you prefer to use a microwave, in microwave-safe bowl, heat the butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3.
- Add Rice Krispies cereal. Stir until well coated.
- Using buttered spatula or wax paper, evenly press the mixture into a 15x10x1-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cool slightly. Using cookie cutters coated with cooking spray, cut into Christmas trees. Decorate with frosting and candies.
Note: always use the freshest marshmallows you can find for the best results. Use butter, not margarine. If you prefer margarine, use stick margarine rather than soft tub spread. These trees keep for 2 days at room temperature in an airtight container. You can freeze the trees for up to 6 weeks stacked in an airtight container. Separate layers with waxed paper so they don't stick. Bring to room temperature for 15 minutes to thaw before serving.
You can also make lovely stars and round "ornaments" using this recipe. If you prefer a bit of color, just add food coloring one drop at a time until you turn your Krispie mixture into the right shade.
