Perfect creamy mashed potatoes are simple to make. All it takes is reversing one step in the process that you are more than likely using.
According to Laura Weathers, product demonstrator and spokesperson for Kitchen Aid, the mistake most cooks make is adding the butter before the milk. Adding the butter before the milk will result in mashed potatoes with a slightly mealy texture per Ms. Weathers. Doing the opposite is the trick.
Ms. Weathers often demonstrates the correct way for making creamy mashed potatoes in her presentations of the companys stand or hand mixers.
The first step, of course, is to boil your potatoes and drain off the water when they are done.
Next, dry mash the drained potatoes using either a hand or stand mixer.
With the mixer running, gradually add warm milk to the dry-mashed potatoes and beat until smooth.
Finally, add the amount of butter you desire and beat until the butter is melted. The result is perfectly creamy mashed potatoes.
Some very tasty additions include chopped fresh parsley or freshly snipped chives.
