Cooking bratwurst is easy

One of the greatest foods to eat, and simplest to prepare, are sausages. My favorite is bratwurst. Simple and fairly cheap, these German sausage links have great flavor. They taste great on buns or without, with a variety of condiments to meet your tastes, and dont require a lot of time to prepare properly. Typically, brats are made up of pork or beef or a combination thereof, but they now make turkey bratwurst, which taste amazing as well. There are dozens of varieties of bratwurst, including cheddar bratwursts, beer brats, spicy brats, foot longs, and many more. All of this talk is making my mouth water, so lets get started!

  1. Thaw out bratwurst thoroughly. This should only take a few hours, approximately 6 in the refrigerator. One of the only concerns about cooking sausages is partially frozen meat. This can cause uneven cooking, and force you to char the outside while the inside is not cooked thoroughly.
  2. The next 6 steps will take about 2 hours. Boil water, amount depends on how many brats you are cooking. Use a 3 qt saucepan for 4 sausages or less, and approximately 4 cups of water. Bring water to a boil, reduce heat to medium.
  3. Add a half can or bottle of any beer (cheaper the better, dont waste a good beer on this step!). You can substitute non-alcoholic beer if preferred. Put remaining beer in the fridge for later. Keep the liquid at a simmer, optimum temperature for cooking sausages is 170.
  4. Once you have reached the ideal temperature, add your bratwursts. Use tongs to prevent splashing. Set a timer to 7 minutes. If the brats are going to sit on top of each other, make sure you turn them occasionally so they cook evenly.
  5. As soon as your timer has gone off, take brats out of the water with tongs.
  6. Place brats in a container that will be able to hold liquid. Put brats in the refrigerator, uncovered, for about 45 minutes.
  7. After 45 minutes are up, pour the remaining beer in the container, cover the brats with plastic wrap, and poke some ventilation holes in the plastic to allow remaining heat to be released. You can allow the brats to marinate for as little as 45 minutes, or for as long as a day, depending on your needs.
  8. Turn your grill on and get to approximately 450. Season your grill, and then place your brats on the grill.
  9. Cook for about 2 minutes on each side, watching for flare ups that will cause charring. Get a nice, even browning on all sides. If necessary, you may need to place the brats on the top shelf of your grill (if you have one) to allow them to cook evenly without burning.
  10. Remove from grill, let sit for a minute. Internal temperature must be 155 or higher, use a stem thermometer to verify. Now its time to eat!!

Some favorite condiments include sauerkraut (hot or cold), grilled onion, relish, mustard, giardiniera (mild or hot), sweet peppers, ketchup, pickles, sport peppers and many other options for you to consider. Some even to choose to eat it plain, allowing the natural flavors to take over. Now stop reading and start eating!
